Christine Hartland, Producer
I produced my first feature film in 2008, the political thriller WMD by David Holroyd (www.wmd-insidestory.com) now on iTunes, Amazon after a small theatrical release in the UK (Autumn 2009).
Before attending Cannes 2008 where we were taking a just completed film (a few hours before the flight to Nice!) that's when I first joined Film Specific -- I realized I had to learn fast about film distribution and marketing. Thanks to Film Specific website I managed to contact many relevant sales agents and some I am still in contact with. It was really helpful. We got ourselves a sales agent and then in the following months some great quotes including "Eerily plausible... impressive" from Graydon Carter (Editor of Vanity Fair) and 'undeniably gripping' by The Guardian. Now we still carry on promoting WMD via single screenings and have had our trailer accepted to a couple of trailer festivals ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=doLCz2bF5Sw ).
Now I'm trying to raise money for other bigger budget features including NITRATE by Guy Ducker and Gavin Boyter (trailer on www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxzifAE15DA - one of 3 winners of the trailermade competition). Making a trailer helped us enormously and we are now sending the script to cast etc.
I am also helping out on micro budget films, sharing the knowledge I have gained from WMD (a lot!), VERITY'S SUMMER by Palme d'Or Nominee Ben Crowe and producer Emma Biggins currently in post-production (www.screendaily.com/news/production/uk-ireland/shooting-begins-on-ben-crowes-verity-summer/5015665.article ) and LIFE JUST IS by Alex Barrett and producer Tom Stuart currently in pre-production with a great young cast which is very exciting (www.lifejustisfilm.com). Again Film Specific webcast, talks etc have been very useful regarding packaging, marketing, financing including what to do and what not to do when!
One of the challenge with these independent films will be to get them noticed and therefore use as many tools as possible including on-line marketing to its best. It's an adventure for sure!
