The $1 Million Indie Film Blueprint: Best Practices From Writer/Director Adam Cultraro (Part 2)
Many in the Film Specific community have come to rely on the invaluable tips and no-nonsense advice from FS Member Adam Cultraro in the FS Forums (under the handle Taormina). It got one member thinking that it would be extremely valuable to focus some questions for Adam in the form of a comprehensive audio interview centered around everything necessary to pull off a $1MM indie. We thought this was a great idea: a filmmaker-to-filmmaker seminar of sorts for those just starting out or newer to filmmaking. Beyond a simple case study, the entire interview would be based around one major question and address all the issues that arise as a result.
Here's the main question posed to Adam as well as the overall premise of the seminar: "Knowing what you know now, how would you go about producing a $1MM indie film? Pretend you're starting from scratch. You're a filmmaker living outside of Hollywood and you want to get into the indie film business, but you want to do it in a smart way."
The questions and answers are entirely filmmaker-to-filmmaker. We conducted the interview, but the questions posed based on the premise were purely from a newer filmmaker. There was so much material to cover that we've split up in the interview in two parts.
In Part Two we address the following questions for Adam:
• The specifics on Debt Financing
• How to borrow against Pre-Sales
• Do you really need to form an LLC?
• When you need a completion bond
• The deal terms associated with bank loans
• How to find a Producing partner
• What the correct budget ratios are for above and below the line
• Is back-end revenue a reality and how you get paid
• How to keep the momentum going and position yourself for an enduring career
• and more!
