Part 1: Introduction

So you've made a film, or you're making a film, and you want to find distribution? A lot of filmmakers believe that in the world of independent films anything goes and all the rules and regulations are for studio films. THIS IS NOT TRUE! We'd all love to believe the world of independent film is all about art for art's sake, but if you were to ask any distributor what is the main motivation behind all their acquisitions, they would tell you it ultimately comes down to dollars. Pure and simple just like any other business. While the indie world is obviously more open to original ideas and fresh voices and that remains its true bread and butter, it is still a business and the rules of business apply.

Basically distributors MUST be able to sell your film to audiences or, rather, think they can. If they don't, they won't acquire it.

No, that doesn't mean it's all about commerce...indie film is about original stories and voices, but distributors, well, they have to pay the bills too. And acquiring films and marketing those films takes time, money, and effort. And distributors are in business to make money. They look to minimize risk while maximizing gains.

Harsh, maybe. But it's the reality. I may have broken your heart, but I didn't make the news, I'm just reporting it....And does this mean all is lost? NO! Basically, filmmakers need to find that place that lies between making art and making a living at making films. Not always easy to negotiate, but the world is full of those who have done just that very successfully.

So what does this mean to you, the filmmaker? There are several key elements you should consider when making your film that will infinitely help your chances at acquiring film distribution and getting your film seen by audiences, hopefully all over the world. The goal of this ten part series on Navigating the Marketplace will outline the elements and help you, the filmmaker, cover all the necessary bases from initial market research to pre through post production to publicity and press kits. Keeping an eye towards eventual distribution from inception through completion of your film (and beyond) is key in acquiring distribution down the line.
